Strong match

Who this is for

  • Small-bore tenor players who need one mouthpiece for everything
  • Lead book playing where the top of the range gets used
  • Doublers who also pick up alto trombone

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Large-bore and bass trombone players — the small shank will not seat
  • Players chasing a wide, dark orchestral low register
  • Beginners who just need something that works; the stock piece costs far less

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Small shank

Fits small-bore tenor and alto trombones. It will not go into a large-shank slide, and no adapter fixes that cleanly.

Detail 02

25mm cup diameter

On the narrow side for tenor. Less lip inside the cup means easier high notes and less fatigue over a long set.

Detail 03

6.46mm rim width

A medium rim. Wide enough to spread pressure across the lip without deadening the feel of an attack.

Detail 04

6.66mm throat

Moderately tight. Adds resistance you can push against, which helps the top of the range stay centered.

Detail 05

V-type backbore

Shapes the air after the throat so the high register stays brilliant and full rather than going thin.

Detail 06

Gold finish

Changes how the rim feels against the lip and how the surface wears. Cup, rim and throat dimensions are unaffected.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your slide receiver first — small shank and large shank are not interchangeable
  2. 02Sold as the mouthpiece alone; no pouch, case or cleaning brush
  3. 03A rim change takes a couple of weeks to settle, so don't judge it on day one

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if it takes a small shank, which most student and small-bore tenor horns do. Large-bore tenors and bass trombones need the large-shank version instead.

02What is the difference between the 9BS and the 9BL?

The cup diameter, rim width, throat and backbore are the same. The BS is small shank and the BL is large shank, so pick by your slide receiver.

03Is this a good jazz mouthpiece?

It handles lead and upper-register playing well. If you want a wider, rounder rim built for endurance, the 12CS is the model aimed at jazz.

04Does the gold plating change the sound?

No. Cup diameter, rim width and throat are what shape the sound, and those are unchanged. The finish affects grip against the lip and how the surface wears.
