Strong match

Who this is for

  • Small-bore tenor players wanting a fuller, wider sound
  • Doublers moving between small and large bore horns
  • Players with settled embouchures chasing more low-register body

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Beginners — the wide cup demands developed chops and air
  • Large-shank horns; the small shank will not seat
  • Lead players wanting a shallow, bright, high-register piece

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Small shank

Fits small-bore tenor trombones. It will not fit a large-shank bass or symphonic tenor receiver.

Detail 02

25.90mm cup diameter

Wide for a small-shank piece. More lip inside the cup means fuller low end but faster fatigue.

Detail 03

6.77mm rim width

A broad rim spreads pressure across the lip, which helps endurance but blurs pinpoint articulation slightly.

Detail 04

7.13mm throat

Large opening for a small-bore horn. Passes more air, adding volume and depth at the cost of resistance.

Detail 05

Medium backbore

Balanced taper out of the throat. Keeps the big cup from feeling completely open and hard to control.

Detail 06

Gold plating

Warmer, slightly slicker feel on the lip than silver, and a workable option if silver irritates your skin.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your horn takes a small shank before ordering
  2. 02Nothing included but the mouthpiece — no pouch or case
  3. 03Expect a real adjustment period; the wide cup tires unprepared players fast

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will the 4BS fit my large-bore trombone?

No. This is a small-shank mouthpiece. A large-bore horn needs a large-shank piece, such as the 4BL in the same family.

02How does 4BS differ from 5BS?

The 4BS has a wider cup, 25.90mm versus 25.73mm, and a larger 7.13mm throat. It is bigger and more demanding in both dimensions.

03Is this a good step up from a stock student mouthpiece?

Not directly. The wide cup and large throat suit a well-developed embouchure. Coming straight off a small student piece is a big jump.

04Why gold plating instead of silver?

Gold feels warmer and slightly more slippery on the lip. It is also the usual pick for players whose skin reacts to silver.
