Strong match

Who this is for

  • Small-bore tenor players wanting large-bore weight and projection
  • Lead and upper-register work needing a solid, brilliant high range
  • Players with nickel sensitivity who react to silver-plated rims

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Large-bore or bass trombones — the small shank will not seat
  • Jazz players wanting a lighter, quicker feel; the 12CS suits that better
  • Beginners still building embouchure on a stock 6½AL

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Small shank

Fits small-bore tenor trombones only. It will sit loose and leak in a large-shank receiver, no adapter included.

Detail 02

25.73mm cup diameter

Mid-size for the small-shank range — wider than the 12CS jazz model, narrower than the 4BS. More sound, more endurance demand.

Detail 03

6.64mm rim width

A moderately wide rim. Spreads pressure across the lip for better endurance, at some cost in flexibility between wide intervals.

Detail 04

6.87mm throat

Opens up airflow versus tighter small-shank models. More volume and low-end body available, but it takes steadier air.

Detail 05

Medium backbore

Balances resistance and openness. Keeps the sound centered instead of spreading when you push into loud playing.

Detail 06

Gold plating

Softer, warmer feel on the lip than silver and hypoallergenic. Wears faster, so expect plating to thin over years of heavy use.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your horn is small shank before ordering — measure the receiver
  2. 02No pouch or case included; a mouthpiece bag prevents rim dings
  3. 03Gold plate costs more than the same size in silver

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my large-bore trombone?

No. The 5BS is small shank. For a large-bore horn you need the large-shank equivalent, the 5BL, which has the same 25.73mm cup but a 6.87mm throat.

02How does the 5BS compare to the 6BS?

The 6BS is slightly smaller at 25.30mm with a shallower cup and V-type backbore — easier high register. The 5BS gives more body and a more solid sound.

03Is gold plating worth the extra cost?

Mainly if silver irritates your lip or you dislike the slicker feel of silver. Acoustically the cup, rim and throat dimensions do the work.

04Is this a good jazz mouthpiece?

The 12CS or 10CS are the jazz-oriented small shanks in this line. The 5BS aims at a fuller, more solid sound with a brilliant high register.
