Strong match

Who this is for

  • Lead and jazz players working in the upper register
  • Long sets where a narrow rim starts to hurt
  • Players wanting high-register focus with a comfortable rim

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Symphonic work — the 1, 1X and 1C are the large-cup options
  • Beginners; the 4B is the easy-blowing all-around piece here
  • Players after a wide, dark orchestral sound

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

16mm cup diameter

The smallest diameter in this range. Less lip inside the cup means easier high notes and a more compact sound.

Detail 02

6mm rim width

The widest rim in the line. Pressure spreads over more lip, so endurance improves but fast lip slurs feel less agile.

Detail 03

V-type backbore

Pushes projection and focus rather than the rounder, blended sound of the barrel backbores used on the 3C, 4C and 5.

Detail 04

3.70mm throat

Mid-size for this line. Keeps resistance up, which is part of what holds the high register together.

Detail 05

Silver plating

Slightly grippier feel than lacquer. It dulls from skin acids, so wipe it down after playing.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Mouthpiece only — no pouch, cap or cleaning brush included
  2. 02Changing rim width resets your embouchure; give it a couple of weeks
  3. 03Try the 4X if 16mm feels too tight — same V backbore

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01What is the difference between the 5X and the 5?

Same 16mm cup and 3.70mm throat. The 5X adds a 6mm cushion rim and a V backbore for projection; the 5 has a 5.30mm rim and barrel backbore for a traditional French cup sound.

02Is the 5X a screamer mouthpiece?

Not quite. Denis Wick's screamer is the 5E — same 16mm cup, bright and crisp. The 5X trades some of that edge for rim comfort and high-register focus.

03Will it fit my trumpet?

It is a trumpet mouthpiece and works on Bb, C, D and Eb trumpets. Cornet and flugelhorn use different shanks and will not accept it.

04Is this a good choice for a returning player?

The wide rim is kind to endurance, but the small cup rewards a developed embouchure. In this line the 4B is the easier all-around starting point.
