Strong match

Who this is for

  • Miking a kick drum inside the shell, live or tracked
  • Loud stages where bleed from snare and hats matters
  • Engineers who want usable kick tone with minimal EQ

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • General vocal or acoustic guitar duty — it's voiced for kick
  • Anyone needing one all-purpose mic for everything
  • Setups without a preamp that can push a dynamic mic

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

30Hz–15kHz frequency response

Reaches well below where most mics stop, so the sub-thud of the kick is captured, not rebuilt with EQ.

Detail 02

Dynamic with 144dB max SPL

Handles the pressure inside a bass drum without distorting. No phantom power needed.

Detail 03

Cardioid, over 20dB off-axis rejection

Rejects snare, hats and stage wash from the sides, keeping the kick channel clean in a mix.

Detail 04

VLM Type E capsule

Very low mass diaphragm reacts fast, so beater attack stays sharp instead of smearing.

Detail 05

2.2 mV sensitivity, 200 ohm output

Low output for a dynamic. Give it a preamp with real gain, especially on quiet passages.

Detail 06

Machined aluminum housing, black anodize

Survives knocks inside a drum and stays visually invisible through the port hole on camera.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01No phantom power required, but you will need a decent preamp
  2. 02Needs a short stand or mount to sit inside the drum
  3. 03XLR cable is a separate purchase in most cases

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Does the D6 need phantom power?

No. It's a dynamic mic, so it works off a plain preamp channel. Leaving phantom on won't help it, and it isn't required.

02Where do I place it in the kick drum?

Through the port hole. Closer to the beater brings out attack, further back inside brings out low end and shell resonance.

03Will it pick up the rest of the kit?

Some, but the cardioid pattern rejects over 20dB off-axis, so snare and hat bleed stays low compared with an open pattern.

04Can I use it on anything besides kick?

It's voiced for kick — deep low end reach and high SPL handling. Those traits suit other large, loud low-frequency sources, but it isn't a general-purpose mic.
