Strong match

Who this is for

  • Podcast and broadcast voice in a live, untreated room
  • Close-up vocal tracking that needs off-axis noise rejected
  • Loud sources where a condenser would overload or pick up spill

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Interfaces with weak preamps — output is far too low
  • Capturing air and detail on quiet acoustic sources
  • Anyone wanting plug-and-play level without a gain stage

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Shure SM7B Dynamic Mic With Cable & Stand construction detail

Detail 01

-59 dB output level

Very low. You need roughly 60 dB of clean gain, which many budget interfaces cannot supply without hiss.

Detail 02

Dynamic cartridge

No phantom power needed and it shrugs off high volume. Trades ultimate detail for durability and rejection.

Detail 03

Cardioid pattern

Picks up what's in front, rejects the sides and rear. Move off-axis and your voice drops noticeably.

Detail 04

Bass rolloff and midrange emphasis switches

Rolloff tames proximity boom when you work close. Midrange presence lifts intelligibility for voices that sit dark.

Detail 05

50Hz–20kHz response

Full range up top but rolls off in the deep bass, which keeps rumble and desk thump out.

Detail 06

Internal air-suspension shockmount

Handles desk bumps and stand vibration without an external mount. Still worth using a boom over a hard surface.

Detail 07

150 ohm XLR output

Standard mic-level connection into any XLR preamp input rated 19 to 300 ohms.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your preamp has 60dB of clean gain or add an inline booster
  2. 02Comes with cable and stand; no interface or preamp included
  3. 03Yoke mounts to 5/8-27 threads; European stands need an adapter

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Does the SM7B need phantom power?

No. It's a dynamic mic. Phantom power won't hurt it, but it does nothing for output level.

02Why is it so quiet on my interface?

Output is -59 dB, unusually low. Most budget preamps run out of clean gain first. An inline gain booster solves it.

03What do the two switches do?

One rolls off low end to cut proximity boom when you're close. The other lifts the midrange for clearer speech.

04What's included in this bundle?

The SM7B, a cable and a stand. You still supply the interface or preamp and any gain booster you need.
