Strong match

Who this is for

  • Lead trombone chairs in big band or commercial horn sections
  • Players on small-bore tenor horns who fight the upper register
  • Trumpet doublers wanting a familiar smaller rim on trombone

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Bass trombonists — the cup diameter is far too small
  • Large-bore orchestral horns, which take a large shank
  • Beginners; the small rim rewards a developed embouchure

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Schilke Standard Series Small Shank Trombone Mouthpiece 42B Silver construction detail

Detail 01

Small shank

Fits small-bore tenor trombone leadpipes only. Large-bore horns need a large shank or an adapter.

Detail 02

.921" cup diameter

Near the bottom of the trombone range. Less lip vibrates, so high notes come easier and endurance holds up.

Detail 03

Contour profile

Schilke's rim shape aimed at lead playing rather than the standard rim used on their beginner sizes.

Detail 04

15/64 throat

The standard Schilke trombone throat. Keeps some resistance behind the sound, which helps projection over a section.

Detail 05

Silver plating

Slightly grippier feel than gold plate and standard on brass mouthpieces. Tarnishes over time; polish restores it.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check whether your horn takes a small or large shank before ordering
  2. 02Mouthpiece only — no case, pouch or brush included
  3. 03Moving from a 47 or 51 is a large jump; expect an adjustment period

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my large bore trombone?

No. This is the small shank version, which fits small and medium-bore tenor trombones. Large-bore horns need the large shank Schilke line.

02Is the 42B good for a beginner?

It is aimed at lead and commercial playing. Schilke points beginners toward the larger 45 and 46, which are easier to fill out in the low register.

03How does the 42B compare to the 43A?

Both are contour-profile lead pieces. The 43A is slightly wider at .924", and the 42B carries less cup volume, favoring a smaller tenor horn.

04Can a trumpet player use this on trombone?

It is one of the smaller trombone rims, so the switch is less jarring. Schilke's 40B, with an even smaller rim and wide-rounded edge, targets doublers more directly.
