01What does the X in 11Ax mean?
It's the backbore. The X backbore is larger than the standard C, improving ease of playing and opening up the sound, originally for Schilke piccolo trumpets.
02Why is this so much more expensive than the silver ones?
Gold plating. The cup, rim, throat, and backbore dimensions match the silver-plated version of the same model.
03How is it different from the 11A?
Same .650" diameter and shallow A cup. The 11A uses a 26 throat and standard backbore; the 11Ax uses a 27 throat and the large X backbore for a freer blow.
04Is this a good first Schilke?
It's a specialized piece. For a general starting point, the 11, 12, or 13 with standard cup and backbore is the more usual entry.
