Strong match

Who this is for

  • Lead trombone in big band or commercial sections
  • Players chasing a crisp, cutting top end
  • Large-bore tenor trombones needing a bright cut

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Bass trombone players — cup is far too small
  • Small-shank horns; this is large shank only
  • Players wanting a dark, broad orchestral sound

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore tenor and bass trombone receivers only. A small-bore horn needs the 6BS instead.

Detail 02

25.40mm cup diameter

On the narrow side for trombone. Less lip inside the rim means easier high notes, thinner low register.

Detail 03

6.66mm throat

Tighter than the 7.30mm on deeper models. More resistance, more back-pressure, easier to control soft high playing.

Detail 04

V-type backbore

Funnel shape adds edge and projection compared with a barrel backbore. Sound carries through a loud section.

Detail 05

6.26mm rim width

Narrow rim. Sharper feel on the lip, more flexibility for slurs and range, less cushion on long gigs.

Detail 06

HeavyTop mass

Extra metal at the rim adds resistance and stability; slotting feels firmer and the core of the note tightens.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your receiver takes large shank before ordering — the 6BS is the small-shank cut.
  2. 02Mouthpiece only. No pouch, brush, or ligature-style extras.
  3. 03Switching rim size mid-season costs weeks of embouchure adjustment.

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my small bore trombone?

No. This is the large-shank 6BL. Denis Wick makes the 6BS in small shank with the same 25.40mm cup and 6.66mm throat if you need the small-bore version.

02Is 6BL good for jazz or classical?

It leans commercial and lead — crisp, clear, strong high register. For orchestral tenor work the 5AL, with its deeper cup and barrel backbore, is the more usual choice.

03How does the HeavyTop differ from the standard Denis Wick?

The added mass around the rim and cup increases resistance and stability. Notes slot more firmly and the tone core tightens. Same cup dimensions, different feel.

04Can I use this on euphonium?

The shank will fit many large-shank euphoniums, but the cup is small and bright for euphonium. The 4AL cup is the classic euphonium size in this line.
