Strong match

Who this is for

  • Beginners in their first months of clarinet lessons
  • Young players who tire out or squeak on harder reeds
  • Returning players easing back after a long layoff

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Intermediate and advanced players — tone thins out and pitch sags
  • Anyone playing loud or in the upper register regularly
  • Contra-alto or contrabass clarinet, which needs the larger cut

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Strength 1

The softest cut. Vibrates with very little air, so notes speak easily, but tone stays thin and altissimo is unstable.

Detail 02

Traditional cut

Vandoren's standard blue-box profile. Thin tip, thicker heart — bright, immediate response that most method books and teachers assume.

Detail 03

Bb clarinet

Sized for soprano Bb only. Won't seat correctly on Eb, alto, bass, or contrabass mouthpieces.

Detail 04

Box of 10

Enough to rotate several reeds across a term. Rotating rather than playing one to death makes each last noticeably longer.

Detail 05

Cane reed

Natural cane swells and shrinks with moisture and weather. Strength varies slightly reed to reed even inside one box.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Reeds only — no mouthpiece, ligature, or reed guard included
  2. 02Soak in water or saliva 30–60 seconds before playing
  3. 03Most students outgrow strength 1 within a few months and move to 2 or 2.5

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is strength 1 too soft for a beginner?

No — it's the usual starting point. It takes the least air and embouchure pressure, which helps you get a sound out at all. You move up as your embouchure develops.

02How long does one reed last?

A few weeks of regular practice if you rotate between several and let each dry flat. Playing one reed every day wears it out much faster.

03Will these fit my bass clarinet?

No. These are cut for Bb soprano clarinet. Bass clarinet takes a larger reed and these will be too small to seal against the mouthpiece.

04What's the difference between Traditional and other Vandoren cuts?

Traditional is the standard blue-box profile — thin tip, quick response, bright tone. It's the reference most teachers and beginner books are written around.
