What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Eb clarinet

Physically smaller than a Bb reed. It will not seat or seal on a Bb, A, or bass clarinet mouthpiece.

Detail 02

Strength 2

Soft end of the range. Easy to get sound out, less back pressure, but the top register can thin out under pressure.

Detail 03

Traditional cut

Vandoren's standard vamp. Thinner tip with a thicker heart — the reference profile most Eb players and teachers work from.

Detail 04

Box of 10

Enough to rotate several reeds and let each dry between sessions. Rotation makes them last considerably longer.

Detail 05

$32 for ten

About $3.20 a reed. Some in every box will play better than others — that is normal for cane.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm you need Eb, not Bb — the sizes are not interchangeable
  2. 02Break new reeds in over short sessions before playing a full rehearsal
  3. 03Cane reeds warp; a reed case or holder keeps them flat

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will these fit a Bb clarinet?

No. Eb clarinet reeds are noticeably smaller and will not cover a Bb mouthpiece window. You need Bb-specific reeds for a Bb instrument.

02Is strength 2 right for a beginner?

Generally yes. Softer reeds vibrate with less air and less embouchure pressure, which is what a new player needs. Many move to 2.5 or 3 as their embouchure develops.

03How long does a reed last?

Depends on playing hours and rotation. Using several in rotation so each dries fully between sessions extends life well beyond playing one until it dies.

04What's the difference between Traditional and other cuts?

Traditional is Vandoren's baseline profile — thin tip, thicker heart. Other cuts adjust that balance for different response and resistance. Traditional is the standard starting point.
