Strong match

Who this is for

  • First months on tenor, before embouchure strength builds
  • Returning players who tire fast after a long layoff
  • Doublers picking up tenor occasionally and wanting easy response

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Players already comfortable at 2.5 or 3
  • Loud big-band work, where a soft reed thins out
  • Anyone chasing a dense, resistant core sound

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Strength 1.5

Very soft cane. Blows with little air pressure, trading tonal core and top-end volume for easy response.

Detail 02

Box of 5

Rotating five reeds instead of playing one daily lets each dry out between sessions and last longer.

Detail 03

Tenor cut

Sized for tenor mouthpieces only. Will not seat correctly on alto, soprano or clarinet.

Detail 04

Natural cane

Swells and warps with moisture. Response shifts over the first few sessions as the reed breaks in.

Detail 05

About $6 per reed

Cane varies piece to piece. Expect one or two in a box to play noticeably worse than the rest.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Reeds only — no mouthpiece, ligature or cap included
  2. 02Break in each new reed over short sessions before full playing
  3. 03Reed strength pairs with tip opening; an open mouthpiece wants softer reeds

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is 1.5 too soft for a beginner?

It is the easy end of the range. Many beginners start at 2 or 2.5. Choose 1.5 for the first few weeks, or with a very open mouthpiece.

02How long do these last?

Rotating all five, weeks of regular practice. A single reed played every day wears out far faster and goes dull and unresponsive.

03Will these fit an alto sax?

No. Tenor reeds are longer and wider than alto. You need the alto cut.

04When should I move up a strength?

When 1.5 feels loose or buzzy, notes overblow easily, or you cannot get volume without the sound closing off. Move to 2, then 2.5.
