Strong match

Who this is for

  • First-year tenor players still building embouchure strength
  • Returning players easing back after a long layoff
  • Anyone finding harder reeds tiring after twenty minutes

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Developed players — 1.5 will feel thin and buzz out loud
  • Alto, soprano or bari sax; tenor reeds only fit tenor
  • Players wanting a dark, dense classical tone

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Strength 1.5

Very soft. Notes speak with minimal air pressure, which helps new players, but the tone thins out and pitch drops when you push.

Detail 02

Box of 5

Five reeds, not one. Rotate between two or three so each dries fully between sessions and they all last longer.

Detail 03

Tenor cut

Sized to a tenor mouthpiece. It will overhang an alto and sit short on a bari — neither will seal properly.

Detail 04

JAVA cut

A brighter, more responsive cut than Vandoren's traditional blue-box line. Reacts fast to articulation and bends easily.

Detail 05

Under $7 per reed

Cheap enough to treat as consumable, so you can move up in strength as you improve without wasting money.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01You need a mouthpiece and ligature; reeds alone won't play
  2. 02Wet the reed before each session or it chips at the tip
  3. 03Most players outgrow 1.5 within months and move to 2 or 2.5

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is 1.5 too soft for me?

If you've played a year or more, probably yes. It's for beginners or players rebuilding chops. Established players usually sit at 2.5 or 3.

02Will these work on my alto?

No. These are cut for tenor. Alto needs alto reeds — the tenor reed is too large to seal on an alto mouthpiece.

03How many reeds are in the box?

Five.

04How long does one reed last?

Playing daily, roughly two to four weeks per reed. Rotating between several in the box stretches that considerably.
