Strong match

Who this is for

  • Big band and jazz baritone players needing projection
  • Bari players moving up from strength 3
  • Anyone finding classical-cut reeds too dark or stuffy

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Alto or tenor players — baritone cut only
  • Classical players wanting a dark, covered tone
  • Developing players; 3.5 on bari takes real air support

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

JAVA Red cut

Filed jazz cut on a thicker blank than standard JAVA. Bright and projecting, with more body behind the sound.

Detail 02

Strength 3.5

Firm for baritone. Rewards strong air support with volume and control; tiring if your embouchure is not there yet.

Detail 03

Baritone saxophone

Sized for bari mouthpieces only. Alto and tenor reeds are not interchangeable with these.

Detail 04

Box of 5

Bari reeds ship five to a box rather than ten. Plan on rotating a smaller working set.

Detail 05

Filed cut

A strip of bark removed above the heel. Response is quicker off the top than an unfiled reed.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Five per box, not ten — factor that into the per-reed cost
  2. 02Reeds only; no mouthpiece, ligature or reed guard
  3. 03Jazz-cut reeds tend to run brighter than a classical cut at the same number

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01How is JAVA Red different from regular JAVA?

JAVA Red uses a thicker blank. It keeps the bright, quick jazz response of the JAVA cut but adds more body and depth underneath it.

02Is 3.5 too hard for baritone?

It is a firm reed on a horn that already takes a lot of air. If you are comfortable on a bari 3 and want more projection and control, 3.5 is the next step.

03Are these good for classical baritone?

The jazz cut leans bright and projecting. Classical players usually want a darker, more covered sound and choose a traditional or V12 cut instead.

04Why only five reeds?

Baritone reeds are physically much larger than alto or soprano reeds, so Vandoren boxes them in fives across the line.
