Strong match

Who this is for

  • Large-bore tenor trombone players wanting a broad, full orchestral sound
  • Section players stepping up from a 51 for more width
  • Bowl-cup players who want rich tone over cutting brightness

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small-shank tenor trombones — the shank won't seat
  • Beginners; the 46 and 47 sizes suit developing embouchures
  • Lead players chasing a bright, edgy upper register

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Schilke Standard Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece - 52 Silver construction detail

Detail 01

1.015 inch (25.78mm) cup diameter

Wide rim contact spreads lip load. More sound and easier low register, but endurance costs on long high passages.

Detail 02

17/64 throat

Mid-size opening. Keeps enough resistance that the horn still centers instead of feeling wide open.

Detail 03

Large shank

Seats in large-bore tenor and bass receivers only. Small-bore slides need a different shank entirely.

Detail 04

Bowl-shaped cup

Rounder cup favors dark, full tone over edge. The sound blends into a section rather than cutting across it.

Detail 05

Slightly larger than the model 51

Five thousandths sounds like nothing, but you feel it at the rim and hear it as extra width.

Detail 06

Silver plating

Tarnishes where fingers and lips touch. Wipe it down after playing and it stays clean.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Mouthpiece only — no pouch, case, or brush included
  2. 02Check your receiver first: large shank will not fit a small-shank slide
  3. 03Give a size change two weeks; range and response shift before settling

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if your slide takes a large shank — large-bore tenor and bass horns. Small-shank slides won't accept it.

02What's the difference between the 52 and the 51?

Same bowl cup style, slightly larger diameter: 1.015 versus 1.010 inch. The extra width broadens the sound and opens up the low register.

03Is this a good beginner mouthpiece?

Not really. The 46 is the size built for beginners. The 52's wider rim asks for a developed embouchure and students usually arrive here later.

04Can I use it on bass trombone?

It's small for full-time bass. The 57 handles tenor and bass doubling, and the 58 and 59 are the bass-focused sizes.
