Strong match

Who this is for

  • First-year bass clarinet students building embouchure
  • Clarinetists doubling on bass for the first time
  • Players who tire quickly on harder reeds

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Experienced players wanting fuller low-register tone
  • Soprano Bb clarinet — wrong size entirely
  • Anyone who finds 1.5 too bright or thin-sounding

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Rico Bass Clarinet Reeds, Box of 3 Strength 1.5 construction detail

Detail 01

Strength 1.5

Very soft. Easy to get a sound out with minimal air support, at the cost of body and volume control.

Detail 02

Box of 3

Smaller pack than most. Enough to rotate two or three reeds but not a long-term supply.

Detail 03

Bass clarinet cut

Wider and longer than a soprano clarinet reed. Not interchangeable with a standard Bb reed.

Detail 04

Cane construction

Soak before use. Response shifts with humidity, and reeds chip if handled roughly.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01No mouthpiece, ligature or reed guard included
  2. 02Soft reeds wear out faster than harder ones under regular playing
  3. 03Most players move past 1.5 within months as embouchure strengthens

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Can I use these on a regular Bb clarinet?

No. Bass clarinet reeds are noticeably larger. They won't sit correctly on a soprano clarinet mouthpiece.

02Is 1.5 too soft?

For a true beginner, no — it makes producing a sound much easier. Once tone feels thin or notes squeak up high, move to a 2 or 2.5.

03Why only three reeds?

It's a small pack. Rotating three reeds still works, but heavy players will go through the box faster than a five-pack.

04Do these need breaking in?

Yes. Wet the reed and play it briefly for the first few sessions rather than for a full rehearsal.
