Strong match

Who this is for

  • Loud rock or metal drummers who break single-ply heads
  • Toms that ring too long in a small room
  • Recording sessions where you want a controlled, drier tom note

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Jazz or brush players who need a coated surface and open sustain
  • Drummers chasing maximum resonance and long sustain from toms
  • Anyone whose tom is not 15 inches across the shell

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Emperor, two plies of film

Two 7.5-mil plies cancel each other's overtones. Shorter sustain, deeper fundamental, and far more dent resistance than a single-ply head.

Detail 02

Smooth white finish

Opaque but untextured. Slightly warmer and less bright than clear film, with no grip for brushes.

Detail 03

Batter head

This is the top, played side. The bottom resonant head is a different, thinner head and is bought separately.

Detail 04

15 in.

Head size is the shell diameter, not the drum's depth. A 15x14 tom still takes a 15-inch head.

Detail 05

White rather than clear

Hides stick marks and scuffs longer than clear film, so it stays presentable well past its tonal prime.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01One head only. No tuning key, no resonant head, no dampening rings.
  2. 02Measure the shell's outside diameter, not the old head's hoop.
  3. 0315-inch toms are uncommon. Confirm your drum before ordering.

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Does this go on the top or bottom of the tom?

Top. It is a batter head, meant for the side you strike. The bottom of the drum takes a thinner resonant head, which is a separate purchase.

02Can I use brushes on it?

Not well. The surface is smooth, so brushes will not produce the sweeping sound they make on a coated head. Use a coated head if brushes matter.

03What is the difference between smooth white and coated?

Both are opaque. Coated adds a textured spray that darkens the tone further and gives brushes something to grab. Smooth white has no texture.

04Will this make my tom less ringy?

Yes. The second ply damps overtones on its own, so most drummers need less tape or fewer muffling rings than with a single-ply head.
