Strong match

Who this is for

  • Hard hitters who dent single-ply heads within weeks
  • Rock and live playing where controlled sustain cuts better
  • Brush work — the coating gives the sweep some grit

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Jazz players wanting long open sustain and high sensitivity
  • Anyone chasing a bright, articulate single-ply attack
  • Bottom or resonant positions — this is a batter head

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Emperor (two-ply)

Two layers of film. Shorter sustain, deeper fundamental, and far more resistance to dents than a single-ply head.

Detail 02

Coated

Textured white surface. Warms the attack, tames overtones slightly, and lets brushes make sound.

Detail 03

14 in.

Fits a 14-inch shell — commonly a floor tom on smaller kits, a rack tom, or a snare batter.

Detail 04

Batter head

The side you strike. Heavier film than a resonant head, built to take stick impact.

Detail 05

Two-ply construction

Naturally muffled. You will likely need less tape, gel, or ring control than with a single-ply.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Head only. No tuning key, muffling gels, or damping rings included.
  2. 02Seat the head by pressing the center down before final tuning, or it will drift flat.
  3. 03Two-ply heads tune lower comfortably — expect a darker pitch than your old single-ply.

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Snare or tom?

It works on either. On a 14-inch snare it gives a fat, controlled backbeat with less ring. On a tom it lowers the pitch and shortens sustain.

02Emperor vs Ambassador — what changes?

Emperor is two plies instead of one. It lasts longer under hard hitting, sounds darker with less overtone ring, and is less sensitive to light playing.

03Do I still need moongel with this?

Usually less. The second ply damps overtones on its own. Try it bare first and add damping only if the ring still bothers you.

04Can I use brushes on it?

Yes. The coating is what brushes need to make a sweeping sound. A clear head gives you almost nothing.
