Strong match

Who this is for

  • Brass band players facing long rehearsals and full concert programs
  • Anyone whose endurance fades in the last third of a gig
  • Players who want a firm center of pitch to lean on

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Trumpet players — this is a cornet shank
  • Players who want a narrow rim for flexibility and quick slurs
  • Anyone after the biggest, roundest sound; the 2 has a wider cup

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

16.5mm cup diameter

Middle of the range. Less lip vibrating than the 2 or 3, so it takes less air and stays controllable up high.

Detail 02

5.5mm rim width

The widest rim offered here. Spreads mouthpiece pressure over more lip, which is where the endurance gain comes from.

Detail 03

4.27mm throat

Tighter than the 4 at 4.58mm. More resistance to push against, more feedback under the note, less air spent.

Detail 04

V-type backbore

Funnel exit rather than open. Focuses the sound and firms up the center of pitch compared with the open-backbore 4.

Detail 05

Gold finish

Surface only. Cup, rim and throat are unchanged, so how it responds comes entirely from the 4BW geometry.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Sold as the mouthpiece alone — budget for a pouch if you carry it loose
  2. 02A wide rim feels foreign for a week or two before it feels comfortable
  3. 03Cornet shank. It will not seat in a trumpet receiver

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trumpet?

No. It is built as a cornet mouthpiece and the shank is sized for a cornet receiver. For a trumpet you need a trumpet mouthpiece.

02What's the difference between the 4BW and the plain 4?

The 4 is 16.4mm cup, 5.27mm rim, 4.58mm throat, open backbore. The 4BW adds a wider 5.5mm rim, a tighter 4.27mm throat and a V backbore for more stability and endurance.

03Does a wider rim make it harder to play?

It trades some flexibility for comfort. Fast lip slurs feel slightly less agile, but pressure is spread over more lip so you last longer.

04Does the gold finish change the sound?

No. The finish is on the surface. Cup diameter, rim width, throat and backbore set the response, and those are the same 4BW dimensions.
