  • Players who already play 3.5 and want more resistance
  • Classical and concert band work needing a dark, centered tone
  • Anyone pairing a close-facing mouthpiece with a stiffer reed

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Beginners — strength 4 is too firm to control
  • Jazz players wanting a bright, flexible sound
  • Anyone unsure of their strength; buy a variety pack first

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Strength 4

Firm. Needs developed embouchure and steady air. Rewards you with a fuller low register and more projection.

Detail 02

V12 cut

Thicker blank and longer palette than a traditional cut, so tone is darker and the attack is more secure.

Detail 03

Bb clarinet only

Won't fit bass, alto, or Eb clarinet. Table and vamp are sized for the standard Bb mouthpiece.

Detail 04

Box of 10

Enough to rotate four or five reeds and let each dry fully between sessions, which extends the life of all of them.

Detail 05

Cane reed

Response shifts with humidity and playing time. Expect a few duds and a few standouts in every box.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01V12 strength 4 plays stiffer than a traditional-cut 4 from the same brand
  2. 02Mouthpiece and ligature are not included
  3. 03New reeds need breaking in over several short sessions before full performances

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is V12 4 the same as a regular Vandoren 4?

No. The V12 has a thicker blank, so it feels and plays stiffer than a traditional-cut reed of the same number. Many players drop half a strength when switching to V12.

02Will these fit my bass clarinet?

No. These are cut for Bb soprano clarinet. Bass clarinet takes a larger reed.

03How long does a box last?

Depends on hours played. Rotating between several reeds rather than playing one until it dies gets far more total playing time from a box.

04Should I go 3.5 or 4?

If you are currently comfortable on 3.5 and feel the reed closing up on loud passages, move to 4. If 3.5 already feels like work, stay put.
