Strong match

Who this is for

  • Replacing flat-sounding stock humbuckers in a two-pickup electric
  • Rock and hard rock players who solo on the bridge pickup
  • Anyone wanting a neck pickup that stays clean under gain

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Players after vintage PAF output and low-gain sparkle throughout
  • Single-coil chime chasers; these are full humbuckers
  • Guitars with only one humbucker rout, since you pay for two

The specifications, translated

Seymour Duncan Hot Rodded SH-4/SH-2 Humbucker Pickup Set, Black Black construction detail

Detail 01

SH-4 JB in the bridge

The higher-output half. Pushes the front end of an amp harder for sustain and lead cut, at the cost of some cleanliness.

Detail 02

SH-2 Jazz in the neck

The lower-output half. Stays articulate and defined rather than woolly, so chords do not turn to mush under distortion.

Detail 03

Matched set, not two separate pickups

Output levels are deliberately mismatched between positions so switching pickups does not cause a jarring volume jump.

Detail 04

Black covers

Open-coil black bobbins. Matches black hardware; will look out of place against gold or cream appointments.

Detail 05

Humbucking construction

Two coils wired to cancel hum, so no 60-cycle buzz near lights and screens. Thicker midrange than a single coil.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Two pickups, no pots, switch, jack, wire or mounting hardware included
  2. 02Soldering required at both positions; budget for a tech if you do not solder
  3. 03Higher bridge output may need pickup height and amp gain re-dialed afterward

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Can I buy just the JB separately?

Yes, the SH-4 JB is sold on its own. The set exists because the JB and Jazz pairing balances output between positions; buying separately costs more for both.

02Will these fit my guitar?

They are standard-size humbuckers, so they fit standard humbucker routs and mounting rings. Measure your rout and string spacing at the bridge before ordering.

03Is the JB too hot for cleans?

It breaks up earlier than a vintage-output humbucker. Rolling the guitar volume back cleans it up; the Jazz neck pickup handles clean work more naturally.

04Do I need to change my pots?

Not required. Both work with common 500k pots typical in humbucker guitars. If your guitar uses 250k pots the result will sound darker.
