Strong match

Who this is for

  • Orchestral tenor trombone where a broad, dark core is expected
  • Players on large bore horns wanting fuller low register
  • Stepping up from a stock student mouthpiece on a large bore

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small shank horns — the 51 shank will not fit
  • Lead and commercial playing needing a bright, easy high register
  • Beginners; the wide cup takes air and embouchure strength

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Schilke Standard Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece - 51 Silver construction detail

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large bore tenor and bass trombone receivers only. A small shank horn needs a different taper or an adapter.

Detail 02

1.010" (25.63mm) cup diameter

Wide enough to move real air and settle low, but it costs endurance above the staff for smaller embouchures.

Detail 03

Bowl-shaped cup

Rounded rather than funnel or V. Rich, full tone with less bite than a shallower cup profile.

Detail 04

J throat

A comparatively open throat. More air passes freely, which broadens the sound and reduces resistance behind the note.

Detail 05

Semi-flat rim

Spreads pressure over more lip area, so long sessions feel more comfortable than a narrow round rim.

Detail 06

Silver plating

Slightly firmer grip and a touch more edge in the sound than gold. Some players react to silver on the lip.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your slide receiver is large shank before ordering — measure or check your horn's specs
  2. 02Sold as a single mouthpiece; no pouch, case, or cleaning brush included
  3. 03Cup diameter this wide changes your endurance for a few weeks — expect an adjustment period

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if your horn takes a large shank mouthpiece — typical of large bore tenor and bass trombones. Small and medium bore horns use small shank and will not accept it.

02What's the difference between the 51 and the 52?

The 52 is 1.015" versus the 51's 1.010", with a 17/64 throat instead of the 51's more open J. The 52 gives a slightly broader sound.

03Is this good for jazz or lead playing?

Not really. The wide bowl cup and open J throat favor a dark orchestral sound. Lead players usually want a shallower cup and smaller diameter for high-register response.

04Silver or gold plating — does it change the sound?

The difference is mostly feel. Silver grips a little more and reads slightly brighter; gold feels smoother and slicker. Choose gold if silver irritates your lip.
