Strong match

Who this is for

  • 18-inch bass drums on bop, compact or travel kits
  • Miking the kick without cutting a port yourself
  • Players who want a dark front head under stage lighting

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Anyone who wants a sealed front head and long sustain
  • Batter-side use — this is the front head
  • Bass drums that aren't 18 inches across

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Resonant head

This is the front head facing the audience. The beater side still needs its own batter head, bought separately.

Detail 02

5 in. port hole

Pre-cut. Big enough to pass a mic inside, and it vents air so the note is shorter and punchier.

Detail 03

Powerstroke 3

Carries an underlay dampening ring at the edge, which trims overtones and tightens the note without added muffling inside the drum.

Detail 04

Ebony film

Opaque black rather than clear. Nothing inside the drum shows through, and the front reads dark on stage.

Detail 05

18 in.

Matches the shell diameter, not the hoop. Common on compact and jazz kits rather than standard 22-inch setups.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Head only — batter head, mic and drum key sold separately
  2. 02Rotate the head so the port lines up with your mic before tightening
  3. 03A ported head can't be un-cut; sustain is permanently shortened

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is this the batter or front head?

Front, or resonant, side. It faces out and takes no beater contact. The strike side needs a separate batter head.

02Do I still need muffling inside?

Usually less. The dampening ring and the port remove much of the ring already. A small pillow adds more control if you want it.

03What mic fits through a 5-inch port?

Most standard kick mics pass through comfortably. Very large-bodied mics may need the head off to position them inside the drum.

04Will it fit a 20-inch bass drum?

No. Head size must match shell diameter, so an 18-inch head fits only an 18-inch bass drum.
