01Do I still need a pillow inside the drum?
Usually not. The built-in muffling ring handles most of the ring. If you still want it drier, a light towel touching the head is enough.
02Does this go on the front or the back of the kick?
The back — the beater side, facing your pedal. The front head, the one with the port hole, is a separate purchase.
03Will black suede sound different from clear?
Somewhat. The matte film is a touch warmer and less attack-forward than clear. The muffling ring has a much bigger effect on the sound than the finish does.
04Is this too damped for recording?
No — controlled kick heads are common in the studio because they need less post-processing. If you want more sustain and ring on tape, choose an unmuffled head instead.
