Strong match

Who this is for

  • Replacing a cracked or worn nut on a Gibson-spec guitar
  • Fixing string binding that causes tuning drift
  • A cheap first upgrade during a full setup

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Fender-style necks — the width and radius will not match
  • Anyone unwilling to file slots to final depth
  • Players who want a bone or brass nut instead

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

1-3/4 inch length (1.735 actual)

Cut slightly under nominal so it drops into a Gibson-width slot. Expect minor sanding at the ends for a clean fit.

Detail 02

3/16 inch thickness

This is the front-to-back dimension in the nut slot. Measure your existing nut here first — it is the easiest fit to get wrong.

Detail 03

1-7/16 inch E-to-E spacing

Sets how far the outer strings sit from the fretboard edge. Wrong spacing means strings slipping off the fret ends.

Detail 04

3/8 inch height

Taller than final height on most guitars. You sand the bottom down until action at the first fret is right.

Detail 05

TUSQ material

A consistent synthetic, so there are no soft spots or grain variation like natural bone. Slots wear evenly.

Detail 06

Pre-slotted, not finished

Slots are started at correct spacing but cut shallow. Final depth is your job with nut files.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Slots need deepening with gauged nut files — a hacksaw blade will not do
  2. 02No glue, files, or shims included
  3. 03Measure your old nut on all three dimensions before ordering

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my Epiphone?

Not necessarily. Epiphone nut slots are often a different thickness. Graph Tech makes a separate Epiphone-cut version — measure before choosing.

02Do I need to file the slots?

Yes. It ships pre-slotted for spacing but the depths are left high so you can cut to your own string gauge and action.

03How is TUSQ different from bone?

TUSQ is a consistent synthetic with no grain or soft spots. Bone varies piece to piece. Both are harder and slicker than plastic.

04How is it attached?

A few small drops of glue at most. The strings hold it down. Heavy glue makes the next replacement much harder.
