Strong match

Who this is for

  • P-Bass necks with a worn or cracked factory nut
  • Basses where strings bind in the slots when tuning
  • Drop tuning where thicker strings chew up the old nut

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Jazz Bass necks — the string spread is narrower there
  • 5-string basses
  • Anyone who wants to cut spacing from scratch

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

TUSQ XL

PTFE runs through the material, so heavy bass strings slide rather than grab when you tune or bend.

Detail 02

1-1/4 inch E-to-E

String spread from E to G at the nut. Wider than a Jazz Bass, matching the P-Bass neck profile.

Detail 03

1/8 inch thickness

Front-to-back depth. Has to match the routed slot in your neck or the nut won't seat properly.

Detail 04

1-21/32 inch length

Sized for a P-Bass neck width. Trim the ends flush with the fingerboard after fitting.

Detail 05

3/16 inch height

Left tall on purpose. Sand the base down to dial in string height at the first fret.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Measure your existing nut's length, thickness and height first
  2. 02No glue, files or sandpaper included
  3. 03Bass slots often need widening for heavier gauge or drop-tuned strings

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit a Jazz Bass?

No. This is cut for Precision spacing at 1-1/4 inch E-to-E and 1-21/32 inch long. A Jazz Bass neck is narrower at the nut and needs the Jazz-specific version.

02Do I need to file the slots?

Usually. Slots come pre-cut but shallow, and final depth depends on your string gauge and desired action. Heavier strings may also need the slots widened.

03Will this help my tuning stability?

It can. The PTFE in TUSQ XL keeps strings from binding in the slots, which is a common cause of a bass going sharp then dropping flat after a bend.

04Can I install this myself?

It's doable with patience. You remove the old nut, clean the slot, fit the new one, sand the base to height, then file slot depth. Nut files make it far easier.
