The beater side. It's a batter head, meant to be struck by your kick pedal. The front head with the port and logo is a separate resonant head.
02Do I still need a pillow or blanket inside?
Usually not. The muffling is built into the head, which is the point of the design. If you want an extremely dead thud, you can still add internal damping.
03Will it fit a 20 or 24 inch kick?
No. This is a 22-inch head and only fits a 22-inch bass drum shell.
04Is clear or coated better for kick?
Clear gives more attack and beater definition. Coated is warmer and softer on the transient. For rock and pop kick punch, clear is the common pick.
