EVANS GMAD Clear Batter Bass Drum Head 20 in. construction detail

Detail 01

GMAD damping system

A foam ring drops into an outer channel on the head, so muffling changes without loosening lugs or pulling the head.

Detail 02

Clear film

More attack and definition than an opaque head, which helps a smaller kick stay audible in a mix.

Detail 03

20 inch size

A smaller kick speaks faster with a higher fundamental. This head is voiced to push the low end back down.

Detail 04

Batter head

Beater side only. The front resonant head is bought separately and does most of the sustain shaping.

Detail 05

Adjustable external damping

Run it ringless for an open, jazzier note or with the ring for a tighter studio thud.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Front resonant head is not included — this is the beater side
  2. 02Confirm your shell is 20 inches, measured across the shell not the hoop
  3. 03Center your beater strike so it clears the outer damping channel

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01How is this different from the EMAD version?

Both use the same external ring approach. This one is voiced toward a deeper, rounder low end rather than maximum attack.

02Is a 20 inch kick too small for rock?

No. A 20 with a damped batter head gets plenty of low end and is far easier to carry and mic than a 24.

03Can I remove the damping ring?

Yes. Pull it out for a more open, longer note. Put it back for a shorter, tighter thud. No retuning required.

04Do I need a ported front head?

Not required, but a port makes mic placement easier and shortens sustain. That head is a separate purchase either way.
