Strong match

Who this is for

  • Lead and commercial playing where the upper register carries the part
  • Large-bore tenor trombones, since this is large shank only
  • Players wanting more ring up top than a wide orchestral cup gives

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Bass trombone parts — 25mm is the smallest cup here
  • Small-bore horns; the large shank will not seat
  • Players after a dark symphonic core, which the barrel-backbore models handle

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore tenor and bass receivers. It will not seat in a small-shank horn — that needs the S models.

Detail 02

25mm cup diameter

The narrowest large-shank cup in the line. Less lip inside the cup makes high notes easier and trims low-end spread.

Detail 03

6.66mm throat

Tighter than the 7.13–7.45mm orchestral throats. More resistance, more focus, less sound dumped at high volume.

Detail 04

V-type backbore

Adds brilliance and ring compared with the barrel backbores on the deeper symphonic pieces.

Detail 05

6.46mm rim width

Mid-range for the line. Enough cushion for long sets without dulling articulation.

Detail 06

Silver finish

A firm, slightly grippy surface on the lip. It dulls with skin oils and polishes back.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your receiver first — large shank only, no small-bore fit
  2. 02Mouthpiece only; no pouch or case included
  3. 03Coming from a 5AL or wider, allow weeks to adjust to the smaller rim

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if it takes a large shank — most large-bore tenors and bass trombones. Small-bore horns need the small-shank version, the 9BS, which shares this cup and rim.

02How does the 9BL compare to the 6BL?

Same 6.66mm throat and V-type backbore. The 6BL has a slightly larger 25.30mm cup and narrower rim and is the more general-purpose piece; the 9BL is the brighter, higher-focused one.

03Is this suitable for bass trombone?

No. At 25mm this is the smallest cup in the large-shank range. Bass players want the 1AL, 2AL or 00AL end of the line for low-register weight.

04Is it good for lead playing?

Yes. The narrow cup, tight throat and V backbore favor a brilliant, carrying high register, which is what lead and commercial work asks for.
