Strong match

Who this is for

  • Bass trombonists who need secure highs without losing the bottom
  • Large-bore tenor players doubling on bass parts
  • Playing with wide leaps and fast slurs

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small-bore horns — a large shank will not seat
  • Players already fighting endurance; the narrow rim concentrates pressure
  • Beginners on student trombones

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore tenor and bass trombone receivers only. Small-bore horns need a small-shank piece such as the 5BS or 6BS.

Detail 02

27mm cup diameter

Bass trombone territory. More lip vibrates inside the cup, so lows open up but the piece asks for more air.

Detail 03

6.15mm rim width

Narrow for a cup this size — the 2AL runs 6.73mm. Sharper edge finds notes faster but tires the chops sooner.

Detail 04

7.30mm throat

Mid-size for a bass piece. Keeps enough resistance that the sound stays centered instead of spreading at loud dynamics.

Detail 05

Barrel backbore

Straight-walled behind the throat rather than tapered. Gives a more solid, traditional core than the V-type backbores in this line.

Detail 06

Silver plating

Firmer, grippier against the lip than gold. It will wear thin at the rim and shank after years of daily playing.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Mouthpiece only — no pouch, brush, or case included
  2. 02Check your receiver first; large shank will not enter a small-bore slide
  3. 03Give any rim change two weeks before judging endurance

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my bass trombone?

Yes, if it takes a large shank — standard on bass and large-bore tenor trombones. Small-bore tenor slides need a small-shank mouthpiece instead.

02What is the difference between the 2NAL and the 2AL?

Same 27mm cup, 7.30mm throat and barrel backbore. The 2NAL rim is 6.15mm against the 2AL's 6.73mm — narrower, quicker to respond, sharper feel.

03Can I use it on a tenor trombone?

Only on a large-bore tenor, and it is a big cup for tenor work. Most tenor players sit nearer 25–26mm, which is the 5AL or 4AL range.

04Does the narrow rim hurt endurance?

It can. Less contact area puts pressure on a smaller patch of lip. For long sets, the wider rims on the 2AL or 3AL hold up better.
