Strong match

Who this is for

  • Replacing a worn or broken C on a 4/4 cello
  • Players who want long string life and stable tuning
  • Building a mixed setup with a darker, powerful bottom string

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Fractional cellos — 4/4 only
  • Anyone needing a complete set; this is the C alone
  • Players after a bright, sweet gut or synthetic-core sound

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Steel rope core

Many fine steel strands twisted together. Far more flexible than solid steel, and it holds pitch through temperature swings.

Detail 02

Spirocore voicing

Dark and powerful rather than sweet. It sits under the upper strings with weight instead of cutting over them.

Detail 03

4/4 size

Sized for a full-size cello. Shorter instruments need the matching fractional length or the winding ends up in the wrong place.

Detail 04

C string only

The lowest of the four. Pair it with whatever A, D and G you already run, or buy the rest separately.

Detail 05

Lower price than the tungsten version

Standard winding instead of tungsten. Slightly thicker at pitch, a bit slower to speak, and it costs less than half as much.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01One string only — the A, D and G are sold separately
  2. 02Allow a few days of stretching before the pitch settles
  3. 03Check your fine tuner; steel-core strings are hard to tune by peg alone

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Does this work on a 3/4 or 1/2 cello?

No. This is the 4/4 length. Smaller instruments need the fractional version so the winding sits correctly at the nut and tailpiece.

02How is this different from the tungsten C?

The tungsten version uses a denser winding, so it is thinner at pitch and speaks faster with a more focused low end. This one costs considerably less.

03How long will a Spirocore C last?

Steel rope core strings outlast gut and synthetic cores by a wide margin. Many players get a year or more before the tone dulls noticeably.

04Can I mix this with strings from another brand?

Yes. Mixing a darker, powerful C under brighter upper strings is common. Expect some difference in feel and response across the set.
