01What is the difference between the 14 and the 14A4a?
The cup diameter is nearly the same. The 14 uses a standard rim, cup and backbore for general playing; the 14A4a has a shallow A cup, semi-flat 4 rim and tight backbore for upper register.
02Is the 14 too big for a high school player?
It is medium-large at .670 inches. Many players manage fine, but if endurance is the limit, the smaller 13 or 12 diameters ask less of the chops.
03Does gold plating change the sound?
Feel more than sound. Gold is slicker against the lip and will not tarnish. Most players switch to it because silver irritates their skin.
04Will it fit any trumpet?
Standard trumpet receivers take this shank. Cornets use a different shank, so this will not seat correctly in a cornet — Schilke lists cornet versions separately.
