Strong match

Who this is for

  • Piccolo trumpet players who feel choked on a standard backbore
  • Doublers who already play an 11 or 11A rim
  • Baroque and high register work on picc

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Players wanting one mouthpiece for Bb work
  • Cornet — the 11E and 8mmE2 are the funnel cups
  • Anyone needing a deep cup for orchestral tone

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

x-backbore

The reason this model exists. It eases the blow and opens the sound specifically on piccolo trumpet.

Detail 02

.650 inch cup diameter

Same rim size as the 11 and 11A, so moving between them changes cup and backbore, not rim feel.

Detail 03

27 throat

Matches Schilke's shallow A-cup models like the 10A4a and 13A4a rather than the 26 on the plain 11.

Detail 04

A cup

Shallower than the standard 11. Less cup volume, which is what suits the short tubing of a picc.

Detail 05

Silver plate

Finish only. Cup, rim and backbore dimensions are the same as the model in any other plating.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your piccolo takes a trumpet-shank mouthpiece, not a cornet shank
  2. 02Mouthpiece only — no pouch included
  3. 03Keep your Bb piece; intonation on picc needs practice time to reset

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Can I use the 11Ax on my Bb trumpet?

It will seat in a standard trumpet receiver, but the x-backbore was developed for piccolo. On Bb, the 11 or 11A gives you the same rim with a standard c-backbore.

02What is the difference between the 11A and the 11Ax?

Same .650 inch rim and shallow A cup. The 11Ax has the x-backbore and a 27 throat for piccolo; the 11A has the standard 26 throat.

03Is this a good lead mouthpiece?

It is built for piccolo. The 13A4a is the one described as an ideal lead piece, with a shallow A cup, semi-flat 4 rim and tight a-backbore.

04How does the rim compare to a 12 or 13?

Smaller. The 11Ax is .650 inch, the 12 is .657 and the 13 is .665. The 11Ax also uses a shallower cup than either.
