What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

.675-inch cup diameter

A large diameter for an upper register piece. More lip in the cup keeps the sound from getting thin and pinched.

Detail 02

Shallow A cup

Reduced cup volume makes high notes speak with less effort. You give up depth in the low and middle register.

Detail 03

Number 4 semi-flat rim

Spreads pressure across a wider contact area, which helps on long high passages.

Detail 04

27 throat

Larger than the 26 throat on most of this group. Slightly more air moves through before the backbore.

Detail 05

C-backbore

The 15A4a uses a tight a-backbore. This one blows more openly with less built-in resistance.

Detail 06

Gold finish

Finish only. Cup diameter, cup depth, rim number and backbore are the same as this model in other finishes.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Mouthpiece only. No pouch, case or cleaning brush included.
  2. 02This is the cornet version. Confirm the shank matches your instrument's receiver before ordering.
  3. 03If it blows too freely up high, the 15A4a is the same rim with a tighter backbore.

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01What's the difference between the 15A4 and 15A4a?

Both share the .675-inch cup, shallow A cup and number 4 semi-flat rim. The 15A4 has the larger c-backbore for an open feel; the 15A4a uses a tight a-backbore with more resistance.

02Will this give me a traditional cornet sound?

Not the deep, round one. The shallow A cup is built for the upper register. The funnel-shaped cups in Schilke's range, like the 11E and 8E2, are the ones aimed at classic cornet tone.

03Is a .675-inch cup too big for high register playing?

It's large for an upper register piece, which is the point. The shallow cup and semi-flat rim do the high register work while the wider diameter keeps tone and volume in the sound.

04How does this compare to the plain model 15?

The 15 is .674 inch with a 26 throat and a full cup for free-blowing, all-around playing. The 15A4 keeps a similar diameter but goes shallow with a semi-flat rim for range.
