  • Concert band and orchestral section work needing one versatile cup
  • Players stepping up from a small student mouthpiece

Schilke Standard Large Shank Trombone Mouthpiece - 50 Silver construction detail

Detail 01

1.00 inch (25.40mm) cup diameter

Full adult tenor size. More lip inside the rim than student pieces, so low register opens up.

Detail 02

Large shank

Fits large-bore tenor and bass receivers only. A small-shank horn needs an adapter or a different piece.

Detail 03

17/64 throat

Wider than the 15/64 throat on the smaller models. Blows freer, moves more air, needs more support.

Detail 04

Standard Schilke cup and rim

No specialty letter designation, so response and intonation stay even rather than tilted toward high or low register.

Detail 05

Silver plating

Slightly grippier on the lip than gold and slower to tarnish than raw brass. Some players react to silver.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your receiver: large shank only, no small-bore tenor fit
  2. 02Mouthpiece only — no pouch, case, or brush included
  3. 03Changing cup size takes a few weeks of embouchure adjustment

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my student trombone?

Only if it has a large-shank receiver. Most student tenor trombones are small shank, and this piece will not seat properly in one.

02What's the difference between the 50 and the 51?

The 51 is slightly wider at 1.010 inch with a large bowl-shaped cup and J throat, aimed at large-bore and orchestral tone. The 50 is the more general-purpose piece.

03Can I use this on bass trombone?

It is sized for medium and large-bore tenor. Bass players are better served by the larger cups in the 57 through 60 range.

04Does the silver plating wear off?

Plating wears at the rim over years of heavy use, especially with acidic skin. Wipe it down after playing and it lasts far longer.
