Strong match

Who this is for

  • Studio overdubs needing a crisp sixteenth-note scrape
  • Latin percussion setups covering samba and bossa patterns
  • Live players who want volume without a mic

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Players wanting a soft, quiet shaker sound
  • Anyone with limited hand or wrist strength — large size adds weight
  • Kids or small hands; the large body is a full-size grip

Detail 01

Large size

Bigger cylinder and more bead chain means louder output and a fuller sound, at the cost of weight and fast-wrist agility.

Detail 02

Wood body

Wood handle and body give a warmer, less clacky attack than plastic, and absorb hand sweat better over long sets.

Detail 03

Steel bead chain

The rattle comes from steel beads dragged over the cylinder — brighter and sharper than seeds in a shaker.

Detail 04

Afuche/cabasa design

You twist the handle against the beads for a scrape, or shake it for a shaker sound. Two techniques, one instrument.

Detail 05

Textured cylinder

The ridged metal surface is what the beads catch on. Wear here dulls the scrape over years of heavy use.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Nothing included beyond the instrument — no bag, stand or mount
  2. 02Bead chains stretch and can break with heavy use; replacements are available
  3. 03Loud in a small room; expect to play softer than you think

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01What is the difference between an afuche and a cabasa?

They are the same instrument here. Afuche is the older name for the beaded gourd version; cabasa is the modern metal-cylinder design. LP uses both names for this product.

02How do you play a cabasa?

Hold the handle in one hand, rest your other palm on the bead chain, and twist the handle back and forth. That scrape is the main sound. Shaking it gives a softer, shaker-like pattern.

03Is the large size harder to play than a standard cabasa?

It is heavier and slower to turn, so fast sixteenth patterns take more effort. In return you get more volume and a fuller sound. Standard sizes are easier for quick work.

04Can the bead chain be replaced?

Yes. The steel bead chain is the wear part on a cabasa and replacement chains are sold separately. Body and handle typically outlast several chains.
