Strong match

Who this is for

  • The single bari chair in a school jazz ensemble
  • Replacing a lost part without rebuying the whole set
  • Players moving up to bari from alto or tenor

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Alto or tenor players — those are separate books
  • Anyone needing the score or a full ensemble set
  • Combos without a written sax section

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Bari sax part

Eb instrument, treble clef. It sounds far below where it's written, so it can't share a bass player's music.

Detail 02

Bottom of the sax section

The bari anchors the sax voicings. Steady time and solid low-end pitch matter more than agility here.

Detail 03

Jazz ensemble scoring

Written as one line inside a full big band. On its own it reads as fragments, not a melody.

Detail 04

Single part book

One player's copy. No score and none of the other sections' parts.

Detail 05

$15.99 per part

Priced per chair. Building a whole band out of single books runs well past a set price.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Bari sax book only — sax, brass and rhythm parts sold separately
  2. 02Check the series title matches what your director assigned
  3. 03Use a full stand; bari parts don't sit well on a clip-on lyre

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Can a tenor sax player use this book?

No. Tenor is pitched in Bb and this is written for an Eb instrument. The notes would come out in the wrong key against the band.

02Will this work for alto sax?

Alto is also in Eb, so the fingerings translate. But the writing is aimed at bari's weight at the bottom of the section and sits oddly on alto.

03Is this the same as the concert band Standard of Excellence book?

No. This is the jazz ensemble edition, with different music written for big band. The concert band books are a separate series.

04Do I need one book per player?

Yes, though big bands normally carry a single bari chair, so one book usually covers the whole part.
