Strong match

Who this is for

  • Second- or third-year alto sax students in a school band
  • Players whose band director assigned the Standard of Excellence series
  • Continuing a method already started in Books 1 and 2

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Absolute beginners — start at Book 1 instead
  • Tenor, bari or soprano players; parts are pitched for alto
  • Self-taught adults wanting theory explained in depth

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Book 3

Third level of the series. Assumes the range, key signatures and rhythms covered in Books 1 and 2.

Detail 02

Alto sax edition

Music is transposed for E-flat alto. It will not line up with a flute or trumpet book.

Detail 03

Band method, not a solo book

Parts are written so a whole band can play the same page together in different keys.

Detail 04

Under $10

Consumable-priced student book. Cheap enough to replace mid-year if it gets destroyed in a locker.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm the director wants Book 3, not Book 2 or a different series
  2. 02Softcover student book — no instrument, reeds or stand included
  3. 03Each player needs their own copy; parts differ by instrument

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Do I need Book 1 and 2 first?

Yes. Book 3 picks up where Book 2 ends and does not re-teach the basics. Starting here without the earlier books will be frustrating.

02Will this work for tenor sax?

No. Alto is an E-flat instrument and tenor is B-flat. Get the tenor sax edition so the parts sound in the right key with the band.

03Is this the same book the whole band uses?

Same series and same page numbers, but each player buys the edition for their own instrument.

04Can an adult use this to learn on their own?

It works, but it is built for a director-led class. Progress is paced for group rehearsal, not solo study.
