Strong match

Who this is for

  • Soprano players moving up from a stock student mouthpiece
  • Jazz and small-group playing where the soprano must cut
  • Players who already control pitch well on soprano

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Alto, tenor or baritone players — soprano shank only
  • Classical soprano work wanting a dark, blended orchestral sound
  • Beginners still fighting soprano intonation and embouchure

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

.075 tip opening

Middle of the road for soprano. Enough resistance to hold pitch, enough opening to push volume.

Detail 02

Model 7*

JodyJazz's sizing runs by number; 7* sits between the close and wide-open ends of the DV soprano range.

Detail 03

Soprano-specific

Soprano mouthpieces are the smallest of the family. Nothing about this fits a larger horn.

Detail 04

DV model

The DV line is built for volume and edge rather than a soft classical blend.

Detail 05

$595

Professional pricing. This is a long-term piece you keep across horns, not a trial purchase.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your ligature fits — soprano ligatures are not interchangeable between mouthpiece bodies
  2. 02Reed strength usually drops half a step to a full step from a stock piece
  3. 03Expect to re-tune your cork position; the piece will sit differently on the neck

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my alto?

No. This is cut for soprano saxophone. Alto needs an alto-shank mouthpiece — JodyJazz makes the DV in alto sizing separately.

02What reed strength should I use?

Most players land a bit softer than what they use on a stock mouthpiece. Buy a mixed strength box and test before committing.

03Is 7* too open for me?

.075 is a moderate soprano opening. If you already play a medium facing comfortably, it should feel familiar with a little more air.

04How is this different from the 8*?

The 8* has a .085 tip — wider, needing more air and generally softer reeds. The 7* is easier to control for longer sets.
