Strong match

Who this is for

  • Bassoonists who play daily and need to dry the bore
  • Students building a maintenance routine on a small budget
  • A spare swab to keep in a second case or locker

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Oboe players — bore is far narrower, use the oboe version
  • Anyone wanting to clean the bocal, which needs its own brush or swab
  • Players who want an absorbent cotton or microfiber swab instead

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Silk

Thin and slick, so it pulls through the bore without bunching. Dries by wiping rather than soaking.

Detail 02

Double reed swab

Cut and weighted for conical woodwind bores, not the straight bore of a clarinet.

Detail 03

Bassoon-specific sizing

Sized for the bassoon's wide bore and long joints. An oboe swab is too small to wipe the walls.

Detail 04

Pull-through design

Weight and cord go in first, cloth follows. No rod to scratch the bore.

Detail 05

$18

Consumable-level price. Swabs get soaked and stained with use, so replacement is expected.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Bocal is not covered — a separate bocal swab or brush is needed
  2. 02Feed the weighted end through first, and pull in one direction only
  3. 03Let the swab dry fully between sessions or it will hold odor

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this work for oboe too?

No. This is the bassoon size. The oboe bore is much narrower and GEM Swabs makes a separate oboe version.

02How often should I swab?

After every playing session, before the instrument goes back in the case. Moisture left in the bore is what damages wood over time.

03Does it clean the bocal?

No. The bocal has its own narrow tube and needs a dedicated bocal swab or brush.

04Can I wash it?

Yes. Silk swabs are washable and should be cleaned periodically, then air dried before going back in the case.
