Independent shopping perspective

The Korena take

A 14-inch oil-filled Evans batter head that kills overtones and shortens sustain. For drummers who want a fat, dry note without taping the drum.

Strong match

Who this is for

  • Loud rock and punk toms that need a short, controlled note
  • Untreated rooms where long ring turns into wash
  • Drummers tired of sticking gels and tape on every drum

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Jazz or orchestral playing that needs open, singing sustain
  • Players chasing bright attack and fine stick articulation
  • Low-volume snare work where ghost-note sensitivity matters

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Hydraulic (oil layer between plies)

The oil damps the film as it vibrates, so the note dies fast and the pitch sits low.

Detail 02

Glass, meaning clear film

More attack and less warmth than a coated head, and nothing for brushes to grab.

Detail 03

Batter head

This is the struck top head. The bottom resonant head still sets sustain and pitch bend.

Detail 04

14 inch

Sized to the shell diameter, not the hoop. Fits a 14-inch floor tom or snare shell.

Detail 05

Under $30

Cheap enough to replace on a schedule rather than play a dented head for another year.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01One head only — no drum key, damping rings, or resonant head included
  2. 02Measure the shell; a 14 will not fit a 13- or 15-inch drum
  3. 03Seat and stretch it once, then retune — new heads drop pitch after the first session

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this work on a snare drum?

It fits any 14-inch shell, including a snare. Expect a fat, short crack with almost no ring, and less response to light stick work and ghost notes.

02Do I still need moongel or tape?

Usually not. The oil layer does the damping. If ring remains, it is normally coming from the resonant head or the tuning, not this head.

03Is this a batter or resonant head?

Batter. It goes on the top, struck side of the drum. Leave a thinner resonant head on the bottom.

04Clear or coated — what changes?

Clear gives sharper attack and a colder tone. Coated is warmer and works with brushes. This is clear, so brushes will not sound right on it.
