Strong match

Who this is for

  • Euphonium players wanting a full, dark low register
  • Large-bore tenor trombonists who already have the air to fill it
  • Players prioritizing bottom-end weight over easy high-register brilliance

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small-bore trombones — the large shank won't seat in the receiver
  • Lead and commercial work that wants a shallow, bright cup
  • Developing players who tire quickly; a 26mm cup takes real air

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore trombone and euphonium receivers only. Small-bore horns need the small-shank models in this line, such as 6BS, 9BS or 12CS.

Detail 02

26mm cup diameter

One of the wider cups here. More lip vibrating means fuller lows, but it costs endurance over a long rehearsal.

Detail 03

6.72mm rim width

Middle of the range. Spreads pressure better than the narrow 6.09mm rims without the cushion of the widest 6.80mm models.

Detail 04

7.38mm throat

A wide opening. Less resistance and more volume on tap, but less of the feedback a tighter throat gives you.

Detail 05

Barrel backbore

Where the V-type backbores in this line lean brilliant, the barrel shape supports the darker, heavier sound the 4AL is built around.

Detail 06

Silver plate

A plated finish that dulls with skin oils. Wipe the rim down after playing and it stays smooth for years.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Confirm your horn takes a large shank before ordering — the small-shank models are separate part numbers
  2. 02Budget for a pouch or a case slot; a dented rim can't be repaired
  3. 03Give it a week — slotting and pitch center shift whenever cup depth changes

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if your horn takes a large-shank mouthpiece, typically large-bore tenors and bass trombones. Small-bore instruments need the small-shank models such as 6BS, 9BS or 12CS.

02Can I use it on euphonium?

Yes. 4AL is a classic euphonium size, and the 26mm cup with the 7.38mm throat is why. It also works for a powerful trombonist on a large-bore horn.

03Is it a good bass trombone mouthpiece?

It plays, but it's at the small end for bass. For a dedicated bass setup, 2AL, 1AL and 0AL go progressively wider and deeper.

04Will it help my high register?

That isn't its focus — the wide, deep cup favors the bottom. Within the large-shank range, 4ABL and 5ABL are the ones built around high-register response.
