Strong match

Who this is for

  • Bass trombone or large-bore tenor with a large shank receiver
  • Players wanting an open blow with some resistance left in
  • Low-register work where a wide cup helps the sound stay full

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Small-shank horns — it will not seat in the receiver
  • Beginners; a 27.11mm cup takes developed embouchure strength
  • Lead or commercial playing that wants a brighter, shallower cup

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Detail 01

Large shank

Fits large-bore and bass trombone receivers only. A small-shank horn needs a different mouthpiece or an adapter.

Detail 02

27.11mm cup diameter

Wide rim contact spreads the lips more. Easier low register, more physically demanding above the staff.

Detail 03

6.09mm rim width

Narrow rim for this size. More lip flexibility and slotting, but less cushion on long sessions.

Detail 04

7.45mm throat

Large throat lets more air through. Fuller, darker sound and higher air demand than a tighter throat.

Detail 05

Open backbore

Free-blowing with less back-pressure. Feels bigger, but gives you less resistance to lean on for pitch centering.

Detail 06

Silver plate

Standard plating, comfortable for most players. Some people react to silver and need gold plate instead.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Check your receiver: large shank does not fit small-bore tenor trombones
  2. 02Sold as the mouthpiece alone — no pouch, case, or brush
  3. 03Expect a break-in period; the wide cup changes endurance before it changes tone

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Will this fit my trombone?

Only if your horn takes a large shank — typical of large-bore tenors and bass trombones. Small-shank student and small-bore tenor horns will not accept it.

02Is 1AL good for a beginner?

No. At 27.11mm with a 7.45mm throat and open backbore, it needs air support and embouchure strength a beginner has not built yet.

03How does it compare to the 3AL?

The 1AL is wider (27.11mm vs 26.40mm), has a narrower rim, and an open rather than barrel backbore — freer blowing and darker, with less rim cushion.

04Does it come with a case?

No. You get the mouthpiece by itself, so budget for a pouch if you carry it loose in a gig bag.
