Independent shopping perspective

The Korena take

A 4-inch black port ring that finishes a hole cut in a bass drum head. For drummers who have already cut, or plan to cut, a port.

Strong match

Who this is for

  • Cleaning up a hand-cut port hole in a resonant head
  • Miking a kick from inside without a ragged head edge
  • Cheap fix when a ported head's edge is fraying

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Drummers who want a fully sealed, unported bass drum sound
  • Anyone unwilling to cut a hole in a drum head
  • Ports that are not 4 inches across

What matters in use

The specifications, translated

Catalog numbers tell only part of the story. These are the details most likely to change how this product feels, sounds, or fits into a setup.

Bass Drum O's Bass Drum O Port Ring 4 in. Black construction detail

Detail 01

4 in. diameter

Fits a 4-inch cut. Enough for a mic cable and small-diaphragm mic, tight for a large kick mic.

Detail 02

Ring, not a head

It trims an existing hole. You still supply the bass drum head and cut the port yourself.

Detail 03

Black finish

Disappears against a black or clear-over-dark head; stands out on a white coated resonant head.

Detail 04

Port ring on the reso head

Opening the reso side shortens sustain and adds attack. The ring itself does not change tone.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01No head, template, or cutting tool included — you cut the hole yourself
  2. 02Measure your existing port; a 5-inch hole will not hold this
  3. 03Position off-center, near the bottom, so the mic can sit inside

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Does this cut the hole for me?

No. You cut the port in the head first, then the ring snaps in to finish the edge and keep it from tearing.

02Will a kick mic fit through 4 inches?

A small-diaphragm or pencil mic fits comfortably. Large-diaphragm kick mics are a tight squeeze and often sit at the hole rather than inside.

03Does it change how the drum sounds?

The port does — less sustain, more attack. The ring only finishes the edge and protects the head from tearing.

04Which head does it go on?

The resonant (front) head, the one facing the audience. Cutting the batter head is not what this is for.
