Strong match

Who this is for

  • Gigging players who need a real DI to front of house
  • Fighting boomy rooms with narrow-band EQ cuts
  • Studio use where the preamp feeds a console or interface

Consider the trade-offs

When to look elsewhere

  • Players who want three knobs and no decisions
  • Small rehearsal-only setups where 450 watts goes unused
  • Anyone avoiding rack gear and its extra bulk

The specifications, translated

Ampeg SVT-3PRO Series Head construction detail

Detail 01

450 watts at 4 ohms, 275 at 8

One 8-ohm cab gets 275 watts. Add a second cab to reach 4 ohms and the full 450.

Detail 02

9-band graphic EQ

Notch out one boomy frequency or lift string attack without disturbing the rest of your tone. The 3-band can't do that.

Detail 03

5-position mid control

Chooses which midrange frequency the mid knob acts on, so you can move the bass forward or back in a mix.

Detail 04

Transformer-balanced line out

A proper DI to the board. Transformer isolation kills ground hum on stage, so you skip the separate DI box.

Detail 05

Preamp out / power amp in

Split the amp in two: record straight off the preamp, or drive these 450 watts from an outboard preamp.

Detail 06

19 x 3.5 inches, 26 pounds

Standard two-space rack size. Racks in with other gear or sits flat on top of a cabinet.

Final check

Know before you order

  1. 01Needs a cab and a speaker cable — an instrument cable will fail or damage the amp
  2. 02Rack mounting means buying the case yourself; 26 pounds plus a rack gets heavy
  3. 03Rated down to 4 ohms — don't wire cabs below that

Product questions

Before you decide

Straight answers to the questions shoppers most often ask about this product.

01Is 450 watts overkill for club gigs?

Headroom, not volume. Running a big amp well below its limit stays clean and tight; a small amp at full tilt compresses and loses definition.

02Can I use it as a DI without plugging in a speaker?

The balanced out feeds the board either way, but keep a cabinet connected. Running a power amp with no load is how amps get damaged.

03What does the 9-band EQ do that the 3-band doesn't?

The 3-band shapes broad regions. The 9-band targets narrow slices, so you can pull one problem frequency out of a bad room and leave everything else alone.

04Will it power two cabinets?

Yes. Two 8-ohm cabs together make a 4-ohm load, which is where the amp puts out its full 450 watts.
